Amy Stamm Photography is unable to provide cake for the Simple Smash or Ultimate Smash and Splash Sessions due to potential allergies and liability concerns. I whole-heartedly recommend Iesha Duffy at Memories By The Bite in Dover, DE for all of your cake needs. If you would like Iesha's contact information, I would be happy to provide it for you.

cake smash sessions-
what you should know

  • Upon arriving at the studio, some babies will be afraid. The studio is a new place and I may be a new person to them. Don't worry- I plan for this! I will probably ask you to sit on the floor with your baby and play with some organic, wooden toys while they get comfortable and relax. You may want to have their favorite songs queued up on your phone or you can bring a favorite toy. Please remember that if baby does not want to part with the toy, it may be in their photos! This is why I provide neutral, wooden toys for sessions. They are cute and not distracting in photos. Also note, while phones can be helpful to play favorite tunes, if you know that your baby will insist on holding the phone, you may want to leave it tucked away. I cannot edit phones out of toddler hands in your images.
  • While it may be helpful to have both parents or a sibling come along to help entertain baby and get them to smile, it is not recommended that you bring more than 2 people to your session- with the exception of those wanting family pictures. Young children may become jealous of their sibling and tend to want to eat the cake, too. This can cause them to get in the way and we could miss valuable shots of the birthday boy or girl. Additionally, bringing too many adults to the session (aunts, uncles, grandparents) can overwhelm and upset baby. Please trust that I have been doing this for a long time and I am experienced in getting babies to smile at my camera.
  • With the exception of the smash cake, I will provide everything needed for your session. I have a variety of clothing for little ones- up to 18 months- and accessories for them to wear. If you would prefer to bring your own wardrobe for your baby, that is also fine. I would be happy to advise or help you with your choices. I do always suggest neutral colors and nothing too bright. Bright colors can cause unflattering color casts on skin.
  • If you choose to order or make your cake, I suggest a 4"-8" round cake. "Naked" cakes are preferred for most sessions and are inexpensive at most local grocery store bakeries. If you would like a themed cake, I highly suggest ordering from a professional. Please do not bring sheet cakes. I also recommend white or vanilla cake- chocolate cake does not photograph as well.
  • To set your baby up for cake smash success, try giving them a cupcake about a week prior to their session. If it doesn't go well, don't panic! it's more about the experience and practice than it is about them enjoying the treat.
  • If baby has a favorite snack- cheerios, puffs, cheese curls, blueberries- you may want to bring some along. There are times that babies are just not interested in getting messy but they will often be interested in familiar snacks, which we can "hide" in and around the cake.
  • A towel will be provided for the tub splash portion of the session. You do not need to bring one. Please make me aware of any skin sensitivities your baby may have prior to the session. I do put a small amount of Honest brand bubble bath in the tub in order to not see babies "bits" in the photos.
